Our History

The West Coast Libertarian Foundation was formerly the Greater Vancouver Libertarian Association. The GVLA was a local association of the Libertarian Party of Canada, a political party which advocates individual freedom and self-responsibility, a free market, and drastically reduced government power.

In the last federal election, the Libertarian Party did not field enough candidates to retain registered party status. This required the Party to turn over all its assets to the federal government. The GVLA turned all its assets over to the Party's main office in Toronto to handle that disposition.

We then created our new organization under a new name in order to continue our work promoting liberty and serving as a rallying point and social convenor for local libertarians. A new name was deemed desirable in order to keep the finances of the new organization clear from the federal party. The name chosen was derived from the GVLA's newsletter, West Coast Libertarian, which the WCLF has taken over and will continue to publish.
